About

The idea  for Tabla Mixta grew out of founder Julia Steck’s passion for the intersection of culture, cuisine, and travel. A graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration with a master's degree in Food Tourism from the Basque Culinary Center, Julia has deep and extensive knowledge of the business side of hospitality and tourism. Even more importantly. Julia has devoted her career to understanding how these industries facilitate meaningful connections between native cultures and spirited travelers.

In 2014, Julia embarked on her first trip to Peru, during which she met the owner of a boutique hotel in the Sacred Valley.  Six months later, she moved to the tiny town of Ollantaytambo deep in the heart of Peru. Over the next three years, Julia helped grow this family-run business to include two hotels, multiple restaurants, an organic farm, and an independent regional travel agency. Throughout this  time, she became acutely aware of the impact that food and agriculture has on travelers’ appreciation and understanding of Peruvian culture. Julia also began to appreciate the unique value of connecting directly with the individuals responsible for our food, an opportunity that is rarely presented to visitors.

Julia’s awareness of food’s capacity to connect—and her desire to share that experience with others—motivated her to further her food education in San Sebastian. In early 2020, after completing her master’s degree in Spain, Julia returned to the Sacred Valley. With a deepened commitment to the region, she began to develop the local network of chefs, farmers, and artisans that form the foundation of the Tabla Mixta experience. As the world gradually reopens to tourism with a greater appreciation for how we are all connected, Julia looks forward to curating custom tours and itineraries for travelers seeking a deeper sense and taste of place.
